USB Type-C: From 2017 in more and more notebooks, but beware of the limits

The USB Type-C interface is experiencing a certain spread among mobile device manufacturers, tablets and smartphones. Most products still depend on the traditional USB standard, with mini-USB connectors available for data transfer and battery charging, but it is evident how the Type-C interface allows you to benefit from a number of practical advantages.

The first, and certainly most appreciated by the users, is to not depend on a specific direction of insertion: the connector can then be mounted in one of the two sides to taste without having to align from the right cable. The second is the ability to provide devices with superior power compared to the traditional USB standard, for example the battery charging time.

Will we see a diffusion of USB Type-C connections even in notebooks? Yes, but not as early as you might expect. Apple was the first to adopt this technology in some of its products and other companies have given it a sequel, such as Samsung with its own 2-in-1 and Huawei for the specular model. Considerations related to production costs, filmed by Digitimes in this article, however, they believe that the spread of this standard in notebooks will not happen so quickly.

The ability of this interface to provide a higher current quantity than the traditional USB connection can create interference and heat dissipation problems in notebook systems when multiple connection interfaces are implemented. The high speed of transmission of USB Type-C devices also requires manufacturers to use a series of additional components in the design of the notebook that adversely affects the cost of production.

We'll certainly see from next year an increasing number of notebooks with integrated USB Type-C interface onboard, but before this can become mainstream you will need to wait for further time. In the meantime, we believe that manufacturers should approach this standard by trying to avoid restrictions that are unwelcome to users, such as the choice to insert only one connection port in their own devices with which to manage connection to Accessory devices In addition to charging the batteries.
